The garden of a Basque farmhouse

The same garden landscaped: mown lawn, stepping stones, flowering beds and a chestnut fence

    Gardens · Larressore · 2026

Overgrown land behind a renovated farmhouse: a redesigned lawn, stone stepping stones, beds of hydrangeas, grasses and lavender, and a chestnut fence in place of the old wire.

We no longer dared go out into this garden. Today, we eat every summer meal out there.
    Amaia et Peio, Larressore

A bank held by stepped stone retaining walls, planted with rock-garden perennials

    Fences and walls · Cambo-les-Bains · 2026

A bank that slipped with every storm. Three tiers of low walls, rockery stones and perennials that hold the soil: nothing moves any more, and the bank flowers from April to October.

    Terraces and paths · Bayonne · 2026

A small town courtyard, paved in crazy paving. The bench and table are cut from stones found on site; ivy covers the walls.

A dark courtyard has become the favourite room of the house.
    Xabi, Bayonne

    Terraces and paths · Arcangues · 2025

A path of stones laid on a sand bed, a few steps to take up the slope, and two low-clipped hedges of shrubby honeysuckle.

    Fences and walls · Espelette · 2025

Forty metres of chestnut palings, driven in without concrete. A local, rot-resistant timber that will turn a pleasing grey over time.

    Natural pond and stepping stones

A natural pond crossed by stepping stones, among waterside plants

    Ponds · Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle · 2025

A pond with no pump or filter, balanced by its waterside plants. A row of large stones lets you cross it; the frogs arrived on their own.

The children spend their Wednesdays counting the frogs.
    Laure, Saint-Pée

White hydrangeas and flowering shrubs in wooden planters, along a wall

    Gardens · Anglet · 2025

A strip of soil along a wall, turned into a garden of wooden planters: hydrangeas, abelias and roses, all suited to partial shade.

    Spring flower beds

A bed of pink tulips, yellow flowers and violas at the edge of a lawn

    Gardens · Biarritz · 2024

Bulbs planted in autumn, violas and wallflowers: a bed that heralds spring from March, then makes way for summer perennials.
